PET NUTRITION
SEAWEED FOR PETFOOD, NAMED TO THE SPECIES AND TESTED PER BATCH
Hand-harvested Irish seaweed, dried below 40°C and milled to your dosing equipment. Supplied as a feed material with batch analysis — so the Moisture % figure on your formulation sheet is the one in the sack you received.
FOUR PLACES SEAWEED ENTERS A PETFOOD LINE
WHERE IT GOES
01
Dry blend & premix
Milled powder for inclusion at the mixer, ahead of extrusion. Mesh specified to your dosing equipment so it flows rather than bridges.
02
Post-extrusion coating
Fine powder applied with the palatant after the die, where the nutrient fraction is not taken through extrusion heat.
03
Treats, chews & dentals
Powder or flake for baked and extruded treats, dental chews and toppers — the formats where a visible, named seaweed does work on the pack.
04
Supplements & toppers
Powder, capsule fill or scoop-dosed tub, and cold-water extract where a liquid carrier suits the product better.
FIGURES FROM INDEPENDENT LAB ANALYSIS, A SINGLE SEASONAL HARVEST. COMPOSITION VARIES NATURALLY BY SEASON, HARVEST LOCATION, AND GROWING CONDITIONS — INDICATIVE ONLY. CURRENT CERTIFICATES OF ANALYSIS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST.
IODINE & COMPLIANCE
A CAT IS NOT A SCALED-DOWN PERSON
Brown seaweeds concentrate iodine, and the level moves with species, season and harvest site. In a small companion animal eating one food every day, that variation is the whole problem: the margin between a useful inclusion rate and an excessive intake is narrow, and it cannot be managed from a textbook figure.
So we test per batch, give you the batch figure with its harvest date, and expect you to dose against that rather than against an average.
We will also tell you when a species is wrong for your product. If a complete diet needs a seaweed inclusion at a rate a brown wrack cannot safely carry, the answer is a red or green species — or no seaweed at all. That is a cheaper conversation at sample stage than after a palatability trial.
-
Tested per batch, by species and harvest date — not a textbook range.
-
Arsenic (with inorganic arsenic where relevant), cadmium, lead and mercury, screened per batch.
-
On the same certificate as composition, against your agreed specification.
-
Declared per species and per production line.
-
Screened against the limits in the animal-feed directive; certificate references the standard applied.
-
EU Organic certificate and operator number supplied on request.
WHY BELOW 40°C
THE DRYING TEMPERATURE IS THE PRODUCT DECISION
Most commodity seaweed is dried fast and hot because it is cheaper. That choice is made before the material reaches you, and it is not recoverable downstream.
Heat-labile fractions: Drying below 40°C is chosen to protect the polyphenols, pigments and vitamin fraction that high-temperature drying degrades. If your claim rests on any of those, the drying curve is part of your specification.
Colour and flavour: Low-temperature drying holds the colour and the clean marine taste — which matters wherever the seaweed is seen or tasted rather than encapsulated.
Hand-harvested, selectively: Cut by hand above the holdfast so the plant regrows. No dredging, no bycatch, no sediment load — and no mixed-species harvest to sort out afterwards.
Named to the species: Every batch is traced to species and harvest site. Commodity seaweed is routinely sold as a genus, or simply as "seaweed" — which leaves you unable to substantiate a species-specific claim.
WHAT WE WILL NOT SAY
WE SUPPLY THE INGREDIENT. YOU OWN THE CLAIM.
Seaweed is a well-studied feed material, and some of that work is genuinely promising. None of it is a licence to put a health claim on a bag.
No borrowed claims: Published results on a named extract, at a named inclusion rate, belong to that material — not to every batch of the same species. We will point you at the literature, tell you what it did and did not test, and leave the claim to your regulatory team.
Composition, not function: What we certify is what is in the batch: composition, iodine, heavy metals, microbiology. Functional performance in your product is yours to demonstrate.
Species-specific, on paper: Every batch is named to the binomial and traced to harvest site. Commodity seaweed is routinely sold as a genus, or as "seaweed meal" — which leaves you unable to substantiate anything species-specific.
Dried below 40°C: Low-temperature drying protects the heat-labile fraction — polyphenols, pigments and vitamins. If your formulation rests on any of those, the drying curve is part of your specification, and it is not recoverable downstream.

START WITH A SAMPLE
TELL US THE SPECIES, THE INCLUSION RATE AND THE ANIMAL
We will send a sample with its batch certificate — and if the species you have in mind cannot carry your inclusion rate safely, we will say so before you build a trial around it.
